Make Net Zero Happen in Utah
Lighting Load
- Reducing the lighting load of a building will not only reduce the energy and cost associated with lighting, but will have an additional impact on the energy and cost related to space cooling.
- Use of task lighting can reduce the permanently installed amount of ambient lighting, thereby reducing the lighting power density and associated energy consumption and electrical cost. Task lighting is suitable for offices, copy rooms, workshops, and warehouses.
- Several lighting controls/strategies can be implemented to reduce lighting usage down to only necessary hours of operation or required light levels, such as occupancy sensors, programmable timing control, and selective switching.
- Using lightly colored wall and ceiling finishes will help diffuse and reflect both ambient light and incoming daylight.
Lighting Power Density
- Several types of high efficiency lighting fixtures are available that can reduce the lighting power density, and thereby reduce the lighting usage. These types of fixtures include LEDs, self ballasted compact florescent lamps, and T-5 or T-8 florescent lamps.
- Use electronic ballasts or electromagnetic hybrid ballasts to reduce the lighting fixture assembly power requirements.
Daylighting
- Install dimming or stepped daylighting controls to minimize the use of installed fixture lighting by as much as 50%, in select areas.
- Building layouts should consider locating spaces with large lighting loads (i.e. spaces with extended occupied hours or gross allowable light power density) near exterior wall/window assemblies to take advantage of daylighting.
Exterior Lighting
- Using programmable timing control in conjunction with a photocell can eliminate any hours that exterior lighting may be used when unnecessary.
- Use energy efficient metal halide or high intensity discharge lamps (HID) for streets, parking lots, and docks.
- Use of LEDs for pedestrian walks, entries, and decorative lighting can significantly reduce the overall exterior lighting load.
